Best Body Sunscreens

The best body sunscreen is the one you will apply generously and reapply. The amount matters more than any number on the bottle.

The short answer

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, water resistant if you will swim or sweat, in a texture you like enough to use generously. Most adults need about an ounce — a shot glass — to cover exposed skin, reapplied every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating.

How We Picked

We required broad-spectrum protection and SPF 30 or higher, then ranked on water resistance, texture and how easily each format lets you apply the full amount. We have not tested any of these.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

What to Look For on the Label

Label termWhat it meansWhy it matters
Broad spectrumProtects against UVA as well as UVBUVA drives aging and contributes to skin cancer
SPF 30 or higherThe recommended minimum for daily useHigher numbers add less than they suggest
Water resistant (40 or 80 minutes)Tested to hold up that long while wet or sweatingNothing is waterproof; reapply after the stated time

US sunscreens may not claim to be waterproof or sweatproof; the regulated claim is water resistant for either 40 or 80 minutes. For the filter question — mineral or chemical — see chemical vs. mineral sunscreen.

The Amount Is the Whole Game

Dermatology guidance puts the amount at roughly one ounce for an adult body — enough to fill a shot glass — and more for larger bodies. SPF is tested at that density. Most people apply a fraction of it, which means they receive a fraction of the protection printed on the bottle.

  • Apply 15 minutes before going outside, to dry skin.
  • Do not forget the easy-to-miss places: ears, back of the neck, tops of the feet, backs of the hands.
  • Reapply every two hours outdoors, and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating — whatever the SPF.
  • Sprays need extra care: spray until skin glistens, then rub it in, and never spray directly at the face.

Applying a thin layer and trusting the SPF number

A high SPF feels like a margin of safety, which tempts people to apply less. But SPF is measured at a thick, even layer — about an ounce for an adult body — and protection falls quickly as the layer thins. An SPF 70 applied sparingly can protect less than an SPF 30 applied properly. The number on the bottle assumes you use enough; if you do not, the number is not what you are getting. Use a full shot glass for your body, and reapply every two hours outdoors.
