Every self-tanner uses the same chemistry. What separates them is format, speed and how forgiving they are — and none of them protects you from the sun.

The short answer
All self-tanners use dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with amino acids in the skin's surface to darken it; the color fades over three to ten days. Choose by format: a mousse such as St. Tropez or Bondi Sands for the body, face drops such as Tan-Luxe, or Jergens Natural Glow to build color gradually.

How We Picked
We confirmed that each product lists DHA, then chose one or two per format — body mousse, face drops, body drops and a gradual daily lotion. We have not tested any of these, and how a shade looks depends on your skin.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

How Self-Tanners Work
According to the FDA, the tanning ingredient in these products, dihydroxyacetone (DHA), is a color additive that darkens the skin by reacting with amino acids in its surface. The browning comes from a reaction similar to the one that browns food, not from melanin, the pigment skin makes in response to UV light.
Many formulas add erythrulose, which works the same way but develops more slowly. Either way, the color is temporary: it fades gradually over three to ten days as the outer layer of skin sheds.

Apply to clean, dry skin. Exfoliating the day before helps color go on evenly — see body scrubs — and a little moisturizer on dry areas such as knees, elbows and ankles keeps them from grabbing too much color. Wash your hands straight after applying.
Keep every self-tanner away from the eyes and lips. The FDA permits DHA only for external use, which excludes the lips, and does not permit it in the eye area. If you would rather have color that washes off the same day, a bronzer is makeup, not a tan.

Who it’s not for
Fragrance-sensitive skin, and anyone who wants very subtle color — a gradual lotion suits that better.
Some people tan in the sun before using a self-tanner, so the result looks more natural. That defeats the purpose: self-tanner exists to give the look without UV exposure, and its color gives no protection — the FDA requires self-tanners without sunscreen to warn that they do not protect against sunburn. Use a self-tanner instead of sun exposure, not on top of it, and keep wearing sunscreen.
Frequently Asked Questions
The color fades gradually over about three to ten days as the outer layer of skin sheds.
No. Only products that contain sunscreen ingredients and carry an SPF number provide protection.
Exfoliate the day before, moisturize dry areas, apply with a mitt, and wash your hands straight after.
You can, but face drops mixed into your usual moisturizer are easier to control.
The FDA permits DHA as a color additive for external use, but not around the eyes or on the lips.
