How We Picked

We ranked on whether the manufacturer publishes the current output, whether the treatment protocol is realistic to sustain, and whether the device requires a proprietary conductive gel — which is a recurring hidden cost in this category.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. The Claim and the Evidence

The claim: microcurrent lifts, tones and contours the face, with results comparable to a non-surgical facelift.

What the evidence supports: microcurrent is an established modality in clinical rehabilitation, where it is used for wound healing and muscle re-education. Facial applications have a smaller literature, but published work does report measurable changes in muscle tone and facial contour with repeated treatment.

Where the gap sits: the facelift comparison is marketing. A surgical procedure repositions tissue permanently; microcurrent produces a temporary change in muscle tone that requires ongoing maintenance. Comparing them is a category error, not an exaggeration of degree.

The honest version is that this works in the way exercise works — real, gradual, and it reverses when you stop. That is not a criticism, but it should be understood before spending several hundred dollars.

The Commitment Is the Product

This deserves its own section, because it is what most reviews leave out.

Manufacturer protocols typically call for five minutes a day, five days a week, for around sixty days, then two or three maintenance sessions a week indefinitely. Results are reported to appear over weeks and to fade over a similar period once use stops.

So the actual purchase is not a device. It is a daily habit sustained indefinitely, plus the ongoing cost of conductive gel, which most devices require and some tie to a proprietary product. Before buying, the useful question is not whether it works but whether you will do it in March.

Contraindications, Which Are Real

Unlike the other tools in this hub, microcurrent passes electrical current through the body, and the standard contraindications should be taken seriously rather than skimmed.

  • Pacemakers and implanted electrical devices. An absolute contraindication.
  • Pregnancy. Manufacturers universally advise against it, and there is no reason to test that.
  • Epilepsy. Discuss with a clinician first.
  • Metal implants or plates in the treatment area, and recent injectable treatments — check with the practitioner who administered them.
  • Active infection, open skin or inflammatory acne in the treatment area.

None of this is exotic, and none of it makes the device dangerous for people it suits. It does mean this is the one tool on this site where reading the manufacturer's contraindication list is genuinely part of the purchase.

What to Check Before Buying

  1. Published current output in microamps. Clinical microcurrent operates at very low levels, and a device that publishes nothing cannot be compared to one that does.
  2. Gel requirement. Whether it accepts any conductive gel or requires a proprietary one. This is the running cost.
  3. Session length and frequency, and whether that fits your life. Five minutes daily is the usual protocol.
  4. Regulatory clearance if claimed — a genuine clearance has a number attached.
  5. Battery life and charging, since a device that needs charging mid-session gets abandoned.
  6. Return policy. Given the commitment, being able to send it back at week six matters.

And the prior question: is your routine complete? If daily sun protection and a retinoid are not established, those deliver considerably more for a small fraction of this cost. A device is the last purchase in a routine, not the first.

Microcurrent has a defining specification — the current it delivers, in microamps — and a device that does not publish it is not describing itself in the terms its own category is built on. What such devices usually publish instead is intensity levels one through five, which is a relative scale with no external reference. Given that this is the most expensive tool on this site and requires an indefinite daily habit, buying one that will not tell you what it does is a poor trade. There are enough devices publishing real specifications that there is no reason to accept a marketing scale instead.
