Oud is the dark, resinous scent of agarwood, formed when Aquilaria trees are infected by mold. Real oud oil is scarce and trade-restricted, so most Western oud perfumes use a synthetic or blended accord. Beginners should start with a soft, woody oud before the smoky, animalic Middle Eastern styles.

What You Are Actually Buying
Oud, or agarwood, forms inside Aquilaria trees as a defensive resin when the wood is infected. The resin-soaked heartwood is distilled into an oil that is among the most expensive raw materials in perfumery. Because wild trees were overharvested, Aquilaria and the related Gyrinops species are listed under CITES, the international treaty regulating trade in endangered species. The consequence for a buyer: most oud in Western designer and niche perfume is an accord — a blend of synthetic and natural materials built to suggest agarwood's smoky, leathery, woody character. Some compositions contain a small amount of real oud; few disclose how much. That is not deceptive in itself, but a label reading oud is a style description, not an ingredient guarantee.

If a composition's price is justified by rare natural oud, the house should be willing to say so; if it will not, judge the fragrance purely on how it smells to you, and compare it against less expensive accords that may do the same job.
