Woody is the largest family in modern perfumery, which means the word alone tells you very little. The wood that leads tells you almost everything.

The short answer
Woody fragrances are built around woods such as vetiver, cedar and sandalwood, often supported by modern woody aroma-chemicals. Because the family is so broad, choose by the leading wood: vetiver for dry and green, cedar for clean and pencil-like, sandalwood for creamy, and aroma-chemical woods for a skin-close hum.

How We Picked
We sorted by leading material rather than by gender marketing or popularity, then chose one well-documented composition for each style. Two of the family's defining fragrances — Diptyque Tam Dao and Lalique Encre Noire — are covered on the woody family page, so this roundup deliberately widens the field. We have not tested these on skin.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

Choose the Wood, Not the Word
Almost every masculine-marketed fragrance and a large share of unisex ones are classified as woody, so a woody recommendation with no further detail is close to meaningless. The useful question is which wood leads, because each has a distinct character. The family itself is explained on the woody family page.
Much of what smells woody in contemporary perfumery comes from synthetic aroma-chemicals rather than wood oils — materials developed to give a smooth, persistent woody effect and to replace natural sources that are scarce or restricted. That is not a compromise to apologize for; it is what makes many modern woody fragrances last as long as they do.

1 — Vetiver and cedar with a mineral edge
Hermes Terre d'Hermes Eau de Toilette
What’s in it
Orange and grapefruit over vetiver and cedar in the published note listing
Composed by Jean-Claude Ellena; launched in 2006
Eau de toilette concentration
It shows how much range the family has: bright citrus sitting on dry woods with a flinty, mineral quality. It is one of the most influential woody compositions of its era.
Who it’s not for
Anyone wanting warmth or sweetness. It is dry and somewhat austere, and some find the mineral note harsh.

2 — A polished, versatile woody
Chanel Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum
What’s in it

Launched in 2010
Eau de parfum concentration
For someone who wants one woody fragrance that works almost anywhere — office, evening, any season — it is among the most widely suitable compositions in the family.
Who it’s not for
Anyone wanting something distinctive. Its versatility comes from being broadly pleasing, and it is very widely worn.

3 — The classic vetiver
Guerlain Vetiver Eau de Toilette
What’s in it
Vetiver with tobacco and spice in the published note listing
Launched in 1961
Eau de toilette concentration
Vetiver is the most characterful wood in perfumery, and this is one of the compositions that defined how it is worn. It is the reference point for the style.
Who it’s not for
Anyone who dislikes earthy, rooty notes. Vetiver is divisive, and this makes no attempt to soften it.

4 — A single woody aroma-chemical
Escentric Molecules Molecule 01
What’s in it
Composed of a single aroma-chemical, Iso E Super
Created by Geza Schoen; launched in 2006
Wears very close to the skin
It isolates the woody material that sits inside a large share of modern fragrances. For a literalist who wants to know what that velvety woody hum actually is, this is the cleanest possible answer.
Who it’s not for
Anyone expecting a full composition. Some people are partly anosmic to the material and can barely smell it; sample first if you can.
Blind-buying a full bottle because it is described as woody
Because woody covers everything from dry vetiver to creamy sandalwood to smoky oud, a woody fragrance you have not smelled is close to a random purchase within a very large family. The descriptor is accurate for all of them and predictive of almost none. This is compounded by aroma-chemicals like Iso E Super, to which some people are partially anosmic — a bottle that others describe as powerful may barely register for you. Buy a sample or a travel size first, wear it for a full day, and decide on the dry-down rather than the first minute.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the wood: vetiver is dry and earthy, cedar clean and pencil-like, sandalwood creamy, oud dark and resinous.
No. Woods are used across all fragrance marketing, and many woody compositions are sold as unisex.
A versatile composition with a fresh opening over woods — cedar- or sandalwood-led styles tend to suit the widest range of settings.
Some woody aroma-chemicals, notably Iso E Super, are ones a share of people are partly anosmic to. Olfactory fatigue also plays a part.
Drier, fresher woody styles such as vetiver or cedar with citrus can work. Dense, resinous woods suit cooler weather better.
