A sheet mask is an occlusive humectant delivery system worn for twenty minutes. Judged as that, it is excellent. Judged as treatment, it is not.

The short answer
The verdict: for value, Mediheal's multi-sheet boxes cost a fraction of single-mask prices and do the same job. For the best texture, Dr.Jart+ Dermask Vital Hydra Solution. For hydrogel — thicker, cooling, stays put — COSRX Advanced Snail Mucin Glass Glow. A sheet mask delivers a burst of hydration for a day or two; it will not treat pigment, acne or lines. Buy by the box and use one before an event.

How We Picked
We sorted by material, because cotton, hydrogel and bio-cellulose behave differently on skin and that difference is more decisive than the essence inside. Materials, counts and sizes come from each brand or a major retailer. We have not tested these, and sheet mask essences are mostly humectants regardless of what the front of the pack says.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

Cotton, Hydrogel or Bio-Cellulose?
Material
How it behaves
Cost per mask
Best for
Cotton / non-woven
Light, slips if you move, dries at the edges

Everyday use, buying in bulk
Hydrogel
Thick jelly, cooling, clings through movement
Mid to high
Puffiness, hot days, lying still
Bio-cellulose

Highest
A single occasion where fit matters
Cotton is the default and it is fine. Hydrogel is the upgrade that is actually noticeable — it holds its own weight, so it does not slide off a jaw, and it feels cold, which is why it reads as more effective than it is. Bio-cellulose fits best and costs most; it is an occasion purchase.
What Twenty Minutes Can and Cannot Do
It can flood the upper layers of skin with humectants under an occlusive barrier, which makes skin look plumper and more even for a day or two. That is a real, visible effect.
It can make makeup sit better, which is why these are an event product.
It cannot deliver an active at a treatment dose. Twenty minutes is not a mechanism for pigment, lines or acne.
It cannot replace a moisturizer. Seal the essence in afterward or most of it evaporates.
Leaving it on longer makes it worse. Once the sheet dries it begins pulling moisture back out of skin.
Three products, three different jobs. If the goal is hydration that lasts past tomorrow, the overnight leave-on mask is the better buy; a sheet mask is for the morning of something.
1 — The best cost per mask
Mediheal Tea Tree Essential Face Mask
What’s in it
Twenty sheets per box, all one essence
Biodegradable non-woven sheet — the brand markets it as vegan, not as cotton
Tea tree essence, marketed for calming and for all skin types; the same Essential sheet also comes in collagen, madecassoside, placenta and vitamin versions
Sheet masks are a volume product, and this is the lowest cost per mask on this page by a clear margin — a fraction of what the single masks above cost per use. Worth knowing before you buy: the ten-sheet boxes in this range work out to the same price per mask, so the twenty-sheet box saves you reordering rather than money.
Who it’s not for
Anyone who wants a mask that stays put while they move around — these thin sheets slip. The tea tree essence also makes this the wrong box if you only want plain hydration.
COSRX also sells a 10-sheet cotton snail mucin mask
Hydrogel is the material upgrade worth paying for, and it is cooling enough to be the right choice on a hot day or a puffy morning. Snail mucin is the essence, if you want the ingredient depth.
Who it’s not for
Anyone with a snail-mucin sensitivity, or who wants to wear a mask while doing chores — hydrogel is heavy.
One of the few sheet masks that publishes an essence concentration rather than a marketing adjective, which is the only way to tell one hydration claim from another.
Who it’s not for
Routine use — the per-mask cost only makes sense for an occasion.
They are the best-selling varieties and the claim does not survive the format. Pigment correction needs a tolerated active used consistently for twelve weeks; wrinkle change needs a retinoid over months. Neither happens in a twenty-minute contact time, whatever is in the essence, and the brightening you see afterward is hydration making skin reflect light more evenly. If pigment is the concern, a [vitamin C serum for dark spots](/ingredients/vitamin-c/best-for-dark-spots) or a [hyperpigmentation serum](/products/best-serum-for-hyperpigmentation) is the product that can actually do it — and a cheap hydrating sheet mask is still worth buying for what it genuinely does.
Frequently Asked Questions
Fifteen to twenty minutes. Once the sheet starts to dry it draws moisture back out of the skin, so remove it before that.
No. Pat the remaining essence in and apply a moisturizer over it, or most of the hydration evaporates.
As often as you like — a hydrating mask is not an exfoliant. Daily use is fine if the essence is just humectants.
They stay in place better and feel cooling, which is a genuine difference. The essence inside is doing the same job either way.
No. It delivers humectants; you still need an occlusive or emollient on top to hold them in.
