A hydrating mask is a moisturizer you leave on longer. That is not a criticism — occasionally that is exactly what dehydrated skin needs — but it is worth knowing before paying jar prices.

The short answer
A hydrating mask is a thick layer of humectants and emollients left on skin for minutes or overnight. It suits dehydrated, tight or travel-worn skin, and does nothing a good moisturizer cannot do if used every night. Laneige Water Sleeping Mask and COSRX Rice Overnight Spa Mask are the reference picks.

How We Picked
We chose four leave-on masks sold in the US, read each ingredient list, and preferred formulas whose hydration comes from named humectants rather than from marketing. Guidance on dry skin comes from the American Academy of Dermatology. We have not tested these products.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

What a Hydrating Mask Actually Is
Strip away the category and a hydrating mask is a moisturizer with more humectant, more occlusion, or both, designed to sit on the skin for longer than a cream would. Overnight versions simply extend that window to seven hours. There is no mechanism unique to masks: what they offer is a heavier dose, occasionally, of what a moisturizer offers nightly.
That makes it a good category for specific situations — after a flight, after a week of retinoid use, in the dead of winter — and a poor one as a permanent routine step. If your skin needs a mask every night, what it actually needs is a better moisturizer. The American Academy of Dermatology's dry-skin advice is that creams and ointments are more effective than lotions, which is the cheaper version of the same insight.
The Formats
Format
How it works
Worth it when
Overnight or sleeping mask
Thick humectant layer with light occlusion, left on all night
Skin is dehydrated or the air is dry
Wash-off cream mask
Ten to twenty minutes, then rinsed
You want a short, visible boost before an event
Sheet mask
Occlusive sheet holding essence against the skin
Travel and short-term plumping; wasteful otherwise
Sheet masks deserve one honest note: the sheet itself does nothing except hold essence against the skin and slow evaporation. A cheap sheet with a good essence beats an expensive sheet with a thin one, and the same effect can be had by applying a hydrating serum under an occlusive cream.
What Does the Hydrating
Glycerin. The workhorse humectant in nearly every mask on this page, and the reason most of them work at all.
Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate. Surface water-binding, and best under something that seals — see hyaluronic acid.
Panthenol. Humectant and soothing, common in overnight formats.
Squalane and light esters. Emollients that stop a humectant layer from feeling tacky.
Occlusives — dimethicone, waxes, petrolatum. The part that makes an overnight mask hold water in rather than lose it.
Niacinamide. Frequently included for barrier support; not a hydrator itself.
What to be wary of: masks sold on a single exotic extract with nothing structural behind it, and fragranced formulas used on skin that is already compromised. If you are masking because your barrier is struggling, fragrance is the ingredient most likely to make the situation worse.
How to Use One Without Wasting It
Apply to damp skin, after cleansing and any hydrating toner or serum.
Use a thick layer for an overnight mask, thin enough that it absorbs by morning rather than transferring to the pillow.
Once or twice a week is the useful frequency for most people.
Rinse wash-off masks after the stated time. Leaving a clay or acid mask on longer is how irritation starts — see best clay masks.
Skip the mask entirely on nights you use a retinoid unless your skin is comfortable with both.
Premium Beauty listing
1 — The default overnight mask
Laneige Water Sleeping Mask
What’s in it
Overnight gel-cream with a hyaluronic acid blend
Sold in 70ml jars and smaller sizes
Lightly scented
The product that made this category mainstream, and still the most reliable of them: light enough not to transfer, substantial enough to matter by morning.
Who it’s not for
Fragrance-sensitive skin, and anyone whose night cream already does this job.
A mask every night instead of a better moisturizer
If your skin is tight every evening, a nightly mask is an expensive way to paper over a moisturizer that is not doing its job. Masks are formulated for occasional use and priced accordingly — often two or three times the cost per ounce of an equivalent cream. Fix the daily step first, and keep the mask for the weeks when travel, weather or an active has left your skin genuinely depleted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Once or twice a week for most people. Nightly use usually means your moisturizer is too light.
Often not. The formats overlap, and many sleeping masks are night creams in larger jars.
They hold essence against the skin and slow evaporation. The sheet itself has no active role.
Yes, on alternate nights. Layering a thick mask over a fresh retinoid application can increase irritation.
It can, if the skin is dehydrated. Choose a gel texture rather than an emollient cream.
