The cleanser is the step most likely to be causing your dry skin. Fixing it is cheaper than every cream bought to compensate for it.

The short answer
Dry skin needs a non-foaming or low-foaming cleanser built on mild surfactants, used with lukewarm water and no washcloth. The American Academy of Dermatology advises a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol, and washing no more than twice a day. CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser and La Roche-Posay Toleriane are the reference picks.

How We Picked
We chose five cleansers sold in the US for dry or sensitive skin, read every ingredient list, and preferred cream, milk and oil formats over high-foaming gels. Washing advice comes from the American Academy of Dermatology. We have not tested these products.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

Why the Cleanser Is Usually the Problem
A cleanser is the only product you apply specifically to remove things from your skin, and the strongest ones remove more than makeup and sunscreen. Harsh surfactants strip the lipids that hold water in, which is why a face can feel squeaky at 8am and tight by 8.05. That squeak is the sensation people were taught to associate with clean, and it is the sound of a damaged barrier.
The American Academy of Dermatology's guidance is short and useful: limit washing to twice a day and after sweating, use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol, apply it with your fingertips rather than a cloth or sponge, rinse with lukewarm water, and blot dry. Nothing in that list involves buying anything expensive.
Sodium lauryl sulfate is the surfactant worth avoiding if your skin is dry: it is an effective cleanser and a well-documented irritant at the levels used in some washes. Its gentler relatives — sodium laureth sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, glucosides — are what most of the cleansers here use instead.
How to Wash Dry Skin
Twice a day at most, and after sweating. Morning-only is fine for very dry skin.
Lukewarm water, never hot. Hot water strips lipids faster and leaves skin redder.
Fingertips only. No washcloths, brushes or muslin cloths — they are abrasive on dry skin.
Thirty seconds is enough. A cleanser does not need dwell time to remove the day.
Blot, do not rub, and moisturize while damp — the step that makes the most difference on a dry face.
If you wear sunscreen and makeup, a single mild cleanser may not remove both. The tidy solution is an oil or balm first and a cream cleanser second, at night only — not a stronger single wash. Our cleansing balm roundup and micellar water roundup cover the first step.
Reading a Cleanser Label
Glycerin high in the list. The humectant that keeps a cleanser from stripping, and a good sign in this category.
Ceramides or cholesterol. Not essential in a rinse-off product, but they mitigate the lipid loss that washing causes — see ceramides.
No alcohol denat. The AAD names alcohol specifically in its dry-skin advice.
No fragrance, if your skin is reactive as well as dry. It is the most common cause of a cleanser stinging.
No scrub particles or acids in your daily cleanser. Exfoliation belongs in a separate, occasional step.
1 — The best all-round pick
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
What’s in it
Three ceramides with hyaluronic acid
Non-foaming, lotion-like texture
Fragrance-free
A non-foaming cleanser with barrier ingredients at drugstore prices, sold in sizes up to 19 oz. It is the default recommendation in this category for good reason.
Who it’s not for
Anyone who wants the squeaky-clean feeling, or who wears heavy makeup and expects one wash to remove it.
The foaming cleanser you have used since you were fifteen
High-foaming gels and bar soaps built on strong surfactants are the most common reason an otherwise sensible routine leaves skin tight. The lather is satisfying and it is also the mechanism: it removes sebum indiscriminately, and on dry skin there is not much to spare. Nothing else in a routine can fully compensate for a cleanser that strips, which is why this is the first thing to change.
Frequently Asked Questions
A cream, milk or low-foam cleanser built on mild surfactants, used with lukewarm water.
You can, but water alone is often enough. The AAD advises washing no more than twice a day.
For light days, yes. If you wear sunscreen or makeup, follow it with a gentle cleanser.
The cleanser is too stripping. Tightness is barrier damage, not cleanliness.
Only at night, and only if you wear sunscreen or makeup. An oil first, a gentle cleanser second.
