How Micellar Water Works
Micellar water contains small amounts of mild surfactants — often poloxamers — suspended in water. The surfactant molecules cluster into tiny spheres called micelles, which attract oil and makeup and hold them so they can be wiped away on a cotton pad. There is no foam and, for many people, no need to rinse.

For heavy or waterproof products, an oil-infused two-phase micellar water or a cleansing balm does the job better. Acne-prone skin is usually better off rinsing afterward or following with a gentle cleanser, since residue left on the skin can contribute to congestion.

Using micellar water as your only cleanse after a day in sunscreen
Micellar water feels like it has done the job — the pad comes away clean, the skin feels fresh — which makes it tempting as a complete evening cleanse. But water-resistant sunscreens and long-wear makeup are designed to cling, and a standard micellar water often leaves a film behind, which on acne-prone skin can mean congestion. After a sunscreen day, use micellar water or a balm to break down products, then a gentle cleanser. Keep micellar-only cleansing for mornings, light makeup and travel.
