Best Lash Serums

The category divides on one ingredient line. Read it before you buy, because it decides both whether the serum works and what it can do to your eyes.

The short answer

The verdict: every over-the-counter lash serum is one of two things. Prostaglandin-analog serums — GrandeLASH-MD (isopropyl cloprostenate) and RevitaLash Advanced (dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethylcloprostenolamide) — produce the visible results, and the FDA has not approved these ingredients for cosmetic use; the only approved lash-growth drug is prescription Latisse. Peptide serums — Vegamour GRO and ForChics ForLash — are cosmetics with milder effects and no prostaglandin risk. Pick the trade-off deliberately.

How We Picked

We read the published ingredient list for each serum and sorted the page by whether it contains a prostaglandin analog, because that single fact determines both the likely result and the risk profile. Regulatory status comes from the FDA and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. We have not tested any of these, and we are not clinicians.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

This is not a marketing distinction. The prostaglandin analogs in over-the-counter serums are in the same chemical class as bimatoprost, the active ingredient in prescription Latisse and in glaucoma drops — which is how the effect on lashes was discovered in the first place, as a side effect noticed by glaucoma patients.

What the FDA and the AAO Say

  • Latisse is the only FDA-approved eyelash growth product, per the American Academy of Ophthalmology. It is prescription-only.
  • Isopropyl cloprostenate is not FDA approved. The FDA issued a warning letter to Lifetech Resources over RapidLash, NeuLash and NeuveauBrow, treating them as unapproved drugs and misbranded cosmetics on the basis of both their claims and their use of that ingredient.
  • Because these products have not been FDA tested, the AAO states that their safety and effects are not known.
  • Iris darkening has been reported and is not reversible. Eye redness, irritation and darkened eyelid skin are reported and resolve after stopping.

None of that means these products do not work. It means the category sells a pharmacological effect at cosmetic-counter risk disclosure, and the honest version of this page says so before it recommends anything.

Using One Without Making It Worse

  1. Apply to clean, dry lash lines at night, one stroke per upper lid. Lower lashes are not necessary and increase contact with the eye.
  2. One stroke means one. More serum does not grow more lash; it increases the volume that migrates onto the eyelid, which is where skin darkening comes from.
  3. Blot any excess immediately with a tissue along the lid.
  4. Give it twelve weeks before judging. Lash follicles cycle slowly, and the published timelines are 8 to 16 weeks.
  5. Stop if the eye is red, itchy or the lid darkens, and see a clinician rather than pushing through.

A cheaper alternative that carries none of this: stop using a waterproof mascara you remove by rubbing. Mechanical lash loss from aggressive removal is common and reversible. A cleansing balm or micellar water dissolves mascara without friction, and a tubing or water-soluble clean mascara avoids the problem entirely.

Grande Cosmetics GrandeLASH-MD Lash Enhancing Serum

Premium Beauty listing

1 — The best-known prostaglandin serum

Grande Cosmetics GrandeLASH-MD Lash Enhancing Serum

What’s in it

  • Contains isopropyl cloprostenate, a synthetic prostaglandin analog
  • Also contains amino acids, hyaluronic acid and grape seed extract
  • 1 mL is a six-week supply; 2 mL and 4 mL sizes are also sold

The category's reference product, and the clearest example of what it is: a prostaglandin analog sold as a cosmetic. The 1 mL size is the sensible way to find out how your eyes react.

Who it’s not for

Anyone with glaucoma, ocular hypertension or any eye condition, anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, and anyone unwilling to accept an unapproved active.

RevitaLash Cosmetics RevitaLash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner

Premium Beauty listing

2 — A prostaglandin serum with a published full INCI

RevitaLash Cosmetics RevitaLash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner

What’s in it

  • Contains dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethylcloprostenolamide, a prostaglandin analog
  • Also contains biotin, biotinyl tripeptide-1 and octapeptide-2
  • 1.0 mL, 2.0 mL and 3.5 mL sizes; a Sensitive version is also sold

Publishes its complete ingredient list, which is how you can confirm what is in it, and pairs the analog with the peptides the milder serums rely on.

Who it’s not for

The same exclusions as any prostaglandin serum, and anyone who wants a cosmetic-only formula.

Vegamour GRO Lash Serum

3 — The prostaglandin-free option

Vegamour GRO Lash Serum

What’s in it

  • Explicitly prostaglandin-free, per the brand
  • Vegan formula built on plant actives and peptides
  • Sold as a single serum with a brush applicator

The pick if you have read the section above and decided against an unapproved analog. Expect conditioning and the appearance of fullness rather than measurable length.

Who it’s not for

Anyone expecting prostaglandin-level results — the formula that avoids the risk also avoids the mechanism.

ForChics ForLash Prostaglandin-Free Eyelash Serum

4 — The peptide route at roughly half Vegamour's price

ForChics ForLash Prostaglandin-Free Eyelash Serum

What’s in it

  • Four peptides including myristoyl pentapeptide-4, per the brand
  • Explicitly prostaglandin-free, stated by the brand
  • Vegan and fragrance-free; the brand does not publish a full ingredient list or the bottle size

The cheaper way into the peptide approach. It names its peptides, states plainly that there is no prostaglandin analog in it, and costs appreciably less than the other prostaglandin-free option on this page.

Who it’s not for

Anyone who wants a visible length change — peptides condition, they do not extend the growth phase the way an analog does. Also anyone who buys on a published INCI: the brand lists key actives by function rather than a full ingredient list, and its before-and-after percentages are self-reported with no published method.

Babe Original Essential Lash Serum

5 — A smaller first bottle

Babe Original Essential Lash Serum

What’s in it

  • Lash-enhancing serum with a fine-tip applicator
  • 1 mL, 2 mL and 4 mL sizes sold
  • Check the current ingredient list before buying — this category reformulates

A 1 mL bottle at the low end of the category's pricing, which is the right size for a trial regardless of which type of serum you decide on.

Who it’s not for

Anyone who has not read the ingredient list — buy a lash serum on its actives, never on its marketing.

Castor oil as a lash growth treatment

It is the internet's favorite answer and the evidence for lash growth is absent. Castor oil is an occlusive that coats the lash shaft, which makes lashes look darker and glossier while it is on them — a real cosmetic effect, and not growth. The practical risk is that applying any oil along the lash line nightly can block meibomian glands and trigger styes or blepharitis in people prone to them. If you want the cosmetic effect without the eyelid risk, a conditioning [clean mascara](/makeup/best-clean-mascara) does the same thing and comes off at night.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ones containing a prostaglandin analog produce visible length and darkening over 8 to 16 weeks. Peptide-only serums condition lashes but do not extend the growth phase the same way.
