Rose is perfumery's most familiar flower, and its most versatile: dewy and fresh, lush and layered, or dark with spice and smoke.

The short answer
Rose perfumes range from fresh to dark. Diptyque Eau Rose is the light, airy one; AERIN Rose de Grasse layers several roses; Byredo Rose of No Man's Land adds pink pepper; Le Labo Rose 31 is spicy and woody; Frédéric Malle Portrait of a Lady is dark and opulent. Most use rose absolute, the form perfumers favor.

How We Picked
We chose rose-led fragrances across styles and prices, avoiding picks already featured in our floral roundup where we could, and took each note listing, year and perfumer from retailers or established reviews. We have not tested these on skin.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

Rose Otto vs Rose Absolute
Perfumers use rose in two main forms. Rose otto is steam-distilled; rose absolute is obtained by solvent extraction and is the form used more commonly in perfumery. The main species are Rosa damascena, grown in Bulgaria, Turkey and Taif, and Rosa centifolia, grown in Morocco, Egypt and France. Yields are tiny — roughly one part oil to three thousand parts petals.

Choosing a Rose
For everyday wear, a fresh rose is the easy choice and suits the office.
For evenings and cooler weather, a spicy or dark rose has more depth.
Rose is not only feminine. Spicy, woody roses such as Rose 31 are widely worn by men.
Rose has a reputation as a grandmotherly note, which puts many people off the whole category. But the style depends almost entirely on what surrounds it: pepper, cumin, incense or blackcurrant can make rose modern, dark or even smoky. Try a spicy or peppery rose before deciding the note is not for you.
