A lip mask is a balm thick enough to survive eight hours of sleep. That is the entire difference, and in winter it is the difference that matters.

The short answer
The verdict: LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask is the reference product and worth its price if you want the nicest texture, at around $24. Neutrogena's Hydro Boost lip mask and Burt's Bees Overnight Intensive do the same job for under $10. What makes any of them work is occlusion, not the actives — a thick layer that stops water escaping while you sleep. Lips have no oil glands, which is why they need this and the rest of your face does not.

How We Picked
We judged these on the one mechanism that matters overnight — how well the texture stays put and seals — then on price, since this category spans a threefold range for broadly the same job. Formulation facts come from each brand. We have not tested these, and lip products are easy to assess yourself within a week.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

Why Lips Chap and Faces Do Not
Lip skin is structurally different from the rest of the face in three ways that all point the same direction. It is far thinner, it has a much thinner stratum corneum, and — the decisive one — it has no sebaceous glands of its own. Your face makes an oily film that slows water loss. Your lips do not make one, so they lose water faster than any other skin on your body and have nothing to replace it with.
That is why the answer to chapped lips is almost always occlusion rather than hydration. Adding water to lips without sealing it in makes the problem worse as it evaporates. A lip mask is simply the thickest, longest-lasting seal you can put on, applied at the time of day you are not eating, drinking or talking it off.
They are three products with three jobs, and the overlap is smaller than the packaging suggests. A lip oil is cosmetic. A balm is maintenance. A mask is the repair step, and it is the only one of the three thick enough to still be there in the morning. Lip oil vs lip balm settles the other pairing.
Getting It Right
Apply a thick layer, not a thin one. Thin defeats the point — the whole mechanism is the depth of the seal.
Use the spatula if one is included, or clean fingers. Dipping a used finger into a pot repeatedly is how a pot goes off early.
Do it as the last step of the night, after everything else, so nothing is applied over the top of it.
Do not exfoliate first if lips are cracked. Scrubbing damaged lips makes them worse; let the mask do the work for a few nights first.
Stop licking them. This is the single biggest cause of persistent chapping, and no product overcomes it.
If lips stay cracked after a fortnight of consistent use, or the corners split and stay split, that is worth a clinician's opinion rather than another product — persistent angular cracking can have causes a balm will not fix.

LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask
What’s in it
Thick overnight leave-on mask in a pot, with a spatula
Berry-scented; several flavors sold
Around $24
The product that made this category, and still the nicest to use: thick enough to last the night without feeling like candle wax. Also the most giftable, which is a real part of its appeal.
Who it’s not for
Anyone fragrance-sensitive, and anyone who objects to paying cult-product prices for occlusion you can buy for $8.
Hyaluronic acid formula from the Hydro Boost range
Around $9
The straightforward answer for anyone who wants the result rather than the brand. It seals overnight, costs a third of the reference pick, and comes in a larger pot than you expect.
Who it’s not for
Anyone who wants the gift-shelf presentation — this one looks like what it is, a drugstore product.
The instinct when lips are flaking is to scrub the flakes off, and every brand sells a sugar scrub for exactly that moment. It is the wrong move. The flaking is damaged barrier, and abrading it mechanically removes the partial seal that is left while creating fresh micro-damage underneath — which is why lips often feel smooth for ten minutes after a scrub and worse by the evening. Lips with no oil glands cannot repair that quickly. Seal them with a thick mask for several nights and the flakes lift on their own. Keep scrubs for maintenance on healthy lips, before lipstick, and not at all while anything is cracked.
Frequently Asked Questions
It is thick enough to stay on for a full night's sleep. A balm is designed for reapplication through the day; a mask is a single overnight seal.
Lip skin has no sebaceous glands, so it has no oily film to slow water loss. It is also far thinner than facial skin.
For the texture and as a gift, yes. For the mechanism alone, no — Neutrogena and Burt's Bees seal overnight for under $10.
Yes. It is occlusive rather than active, so there is nothing to overdo.
Not if they are cracked or flaking. Scrubbing damaged lips makes them worse; seal them for a few nights first.
Temporarily. Hydrated lips look plumper and lines look softer, but the effect lasts as long as the hydration does.
