A humidifier adds moisture to dry indoor air, which dermatologists recommend for dry skin and keratosis pilaris. Ultrasonic models such as Levoit's and Vicks' are filterless; evaporative models such as Honeywell's and Canopy's avoid white mineral dust. Keep indoor humidity at or below 50%, and clean it every third day, as the EPA advises.

Use and Clean It the EPA Way

  • Do not over-humidify: the EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity at or below 50%.
  • Empty, wipe dry and refill portable humidifiers daily.
  • Clean every third day to reduce the buildup of scale and microorganisms; the EPA suggests a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution for surfaces that touch water.
  • Use low-mineral water, such as bottled water labeled distilled, to avoid releasing minerals into the air as white dust.

Running a humidifier you never clean

A humidifier seems like a set-and-forget appliance, and refilling it without emptying it is the easy habit. The EPA advises emptying, drying and refilling portable humidifiers daily and cleaning them every third day, because standing water builds up scale and microorganisms that the machine then puts into the air. If you will not clean it, you are better off without one — or with a model whose parts go in the dishwasher.
