A face oil seals and softens. It adds no water, which is the single fact that decides whether it will help your skin or just sit on it.

The short answer
Face oils are emollients: they soften skin and slow water loss, which suits dry and dull skin. They contain no water, so they cannot hydrate on their own — use them over a water-based layer or mixed into a moisturizer, usually at night. Oily and acne-prone skin should be selective, and fragrant essential-oil blends carry irritation risk.

How We Picked
We grouped by what is in the bottle — a single plant oil, a blend, or an oil carrying an active — since that decides who each one suits. Unscented formulas ranked above fragrant blends for everyday facial use. We have not tested any of these.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

What a Face Oil Does, and What It Cannot
Skin stays hydrated by holding water, and it holds water partly thanks to the lipids in its barrier. A face oil supplements those lipids: it softens, smooths the surface and slows the evaporation of water that is already there. What it cannot do is add water. Oil on dehydrated skin feels comfortable for an hour and leaves the underlying dehydration untouched.
That is why placement matters. Apply a face oil after water-based products — a hydrating serum or a hydrating toner — or press a few drops into your moisturizer. Last at night is the usual slot; under sunscreen, oils can interfere with how evenly a sunscreen film forms.

Who it’s not for
Oily, acne-prone skin, and anyone on a budget — you are paying a premium for one plant oil.
A face oil as your only moisturizer on dehydrated skin
Dehydrated skin is short of water, not oil, and a face oil contains none. Applied alone, it gives a comfortable, glowy finish that feels like the problem is solved — while the tightness returns as soon as it absorbs. People then reach for more oil, and on combination or oily skin that can mean congestion without any improvement in hydration. Put a water-based layer underneath — a hydrating serum or toner — then a moisturizer, and use the oil to seal that in. The oil is the lid, not the contents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not on their own — they contain no water. They soften skin and slow water loss, so they work best over a water-based product.
Last at night, after water-based serums and moisturizer, or mixed into your moisturizer. Many people avoid them under daytime sunscreen.
Sometimes, sparingly, with a very light oil. Many oily-skinned people do better without one.
Not for everyone, but essential oils are a common cause of irritation. Sensitive skin should choose unscented oils.
Yes. A drop or two mixed in is an easy way to add richness without a separate step.
