Best Makeup Gift Sets

The rule for gifting makeup is simple: buy nothing that has to match their skin. Lips, brows and lashes are safe. Base is not.

Makeup products and a palette arranged on a dark surface

The short answer

The verdict: gift lip, brow or lash — never foundation, concealer or powder, because those need a shade match you cannot make for someone else. Clinique's Merry Minis is the best cheap set, around $20, and its Black Honey lipstick is translucent so it works on every skin tone. For brows, the Benefit Gimme Brow set; for lashes, the Game Set Bounce brow-and-lash duo. Avoid any set containing a base product.

How We Picked

We applied one hard filter first — no product that requires matching the recipient's skin tone — then chose sets whose contents are things people use up rather than deluxe samples. Each set was confirmed in stock at the time of writing. Shades read differently on different people, and we have not tested these.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

The Shade-Match Rule

CategorySafe to gift?Why
Lip balm, lip oil, lip maskYesSheer or translucent; works on any tone
Brow gel and brow pencilMostlyOnly two or three shade families, and tinted gels are forgiving
MascaraYesBlack or brown — no matching involved
Translucent or sheer lipstickYesShifts to the wearer's own lip tone
Opaque lipstickRiskyShade is personal and strongly held
Blush and highlighterRiskyUndertone matters more than people expect
Foundation, concealer, powderNoNeeds a real match; a miss is unwearable

That table is the entire page. The reason makeup gift sets have a bad reputation is that most of them include a base product, and a base product in the wrong shade is not a partial miss — it is waste. Every set below stays in the top four rows.

What Makes a Makeup Set Worth Giving

  • Translucent beats opaque. Clinique's Black Honey is the classic example: it is sheer enough that it takes the color of whoever wears it. No shade decision required.
  • Full-size, or near it. A mini mascara is genuinely useful. A 2 ml deluxe sample of six things is not.
  • Tools over color, when in doubt. A good brush or sponge is shade-agnostic and lasts years — see makeup brushes and sponges.
  • Check the expiry logic. Mascara should be replaced about three months after opening, so a set with three mascaras is a set with two wasted mascaras.
  • Skip the 100-piece kit. Those are made of filler and the pigments are poor; see the skip note below.

If none of those fits, the honest fallback is a lip treatment rather than lip color — a lip mask is useful to everyone and carries no shade risk at all.

Clinique Merry Minis Makeup Gift Set

1 — The best cheap set, for almost anyone

Clinique Merry Minis Makeup Gift Set

What’s in it

  • Travel-size High Impact Mascara with Almost Lipstick in Black Honey
  • Black Honey is translucent, so it suits every skin tone
  • Around $20

The single safest makeup gift on this page. A black mascara needs no matching and Black Honey takes the color of whoever puts it on, which removes the only real risk in gifting makeup.

Who it’s not for

Someone who wants full-size products — these are travel sizes, which is how the price works.

Clinique Nude Honey Lip Gift Set

What’s in it

  • Almost Lipstick, a Pop Lip + Cheek Oil and a Quickline lip liner
  • Nude Honey is the softer sibling of Black Honey
  • Around $30

Three lip pieces that work together rather than three unrelated minis, and all of them sheer enough to avoid the shade problem.

Who it’s not for

Anyone who wears strong opaque color — this whole set is deliberately soft.

Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow Set

3 — The brow person

Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow Set

What’s in it

  • Full-size Gimme Brow+ volumizing gel with a brow pencil
  • Sold in shade families rather than exact matches
  • Around $33

Brows are the safest color category to gift because the shade range is narrow and tinted gels are forgiving. This pairs the brand's best-known brow product with a pencil.

Who it’s not for

Anyone whose brow shade you genuinely cannot guess — check the pencil shade before buying, since the set is sold per shade.

4 — Lashes and brows in one box

Benefit Cosmetics Game, Set, Bounce Brow & Lash Duo

What’s in it

  • Mini volumizing mascara plus a setting brow gel
  • The brow gel is a setter, so no shade decision
  • Around $35

A clear brow setter plus a black mascara is the most shade-proof combination in makeup. You could give this to someone whose face you have never seen.

Who it’s not for

Someone who needs to fill sparse brows — a setting gel holds hair in place, it does not add color.

The 100-piece all-in-one makeup kit

Every holiday season these appear at prices that look impossible for the piece count, and the piece count is exactly the problem. The eyeshadows are mostly filler with very little pigment, the lip colors are shades nobody chose, and — the part that matters — these kits almost always include foundation and concealer in one or two generic tones, which is the gift equivalent of guessing someone's shoe size at random. The recipient uses the mascara and bins the rest. Six good pieces that obey the shade rule beat a hundred that do not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lip treatments, sheer or translucent lipstick, mascara, brow gel and tools. Avoid foundation, concealer and powder, which need a shade match you cannot make for someone else.
