A Simple Skincare Routine for Beginners

Three products cover most of what skin needs: a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer and a sunscreen. Everything else is optional, and best added one at a time.

The short answer

A beginner routine needs three steps: wash with a gentle cleanser, moisturize, and wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning. Wash no more than twice a day. CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer and EltaMD UV Clear cover the basics. Add one active at a time, once the routine is a habit.

How We Picked

We chose one widely tolerated, fragrance-free product for each step and checked each ingredient list on INCIDecoder. We have not tested any of these.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

The Routine

1. CleanseOptional — water or a gentle cleanserA gentle cleanser
2. MoisturizeA light moisturizerA moisturizer
3. ProtectBroad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher

The American Academy of Dermatology's advice covers each step. Limit washing to twice a day and after sweating, with a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol. Choose a sunscreen labeled broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher and water resistant, and when you are outdoors, reapply about every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

What to Add, and When

Once the three steps are a habit, add one active ingredient at a time, starting with the concern that bothers you most. Our starter actives guide sequences them over twelve weeks, and routine order covers where each one goes.

If you want to…Start with
Fade dark spotsVitamin C or azelaic acid
Clear breakoutsSalicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide
Smooth lines and textureA retinoid, started slowly
Calm oilinessNiacinamide
  • Do not start several new products at once — if something irritates, you will not know which.
  • Skip scrubs and harsh toners while your routine is new.
  • Keep it fragrance-free at first: the FDA notes that fragrance components can cause reactions in some people.
