Best Skincare for Men

Men's skin is thicker and usually oilier, but the fundamentals are identical. Three products cover most of what matters.

The short answer

The best skincare for men is a short routine: a mild facial cleanser (not bar soap), a moisturizer with sunscreen in the morning, and optionally one active such as a retinoid at night or salicylic acid for oil and ingrown hairs. Shave on wet skin with a moisturizing cream, with the grain. Products marketed to men are optional.

How We Picked

We built the routine from dermatology guidance first, then chose one product per step on formula, fragrance and fit for typically oilier, shaved skin. Products marketed to men were considered but not favored for the label alone. We have not tested any of these.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

The Routine

StepMorningEvening
1. CleanseMild facial cleanserMild facial cleanser
2. Treat (optional)A retinoid, or salicylic acid a few nights a week
3. MoisturizeMoisturizer with SPF 30 or higherPlain moisturizer

That is the whole thing. Dermatology guidance for men emphasizes washing daily and after exercise with a mild cleanser rather than bar soap, which can be drying; choosing oil-free or non-comedogenic products if you are breakout-prone and fragrance-free ones if you are sensitive; and wearing sunscreen outdoors. Men's skin is thicker than women's, but the basic plan is the same.

Order and timing are covered in the layering order guide, and choosing a first active in starter actives.

Shaving Without Irritation

  1. Shave after a shower, or wet your face well first. Softened hair cuts more easily.
  2. Use a moisturizing shaving cream or gel, not soap.
  3. Shave in the direction the hair grows, which lowers the risk of razor bumps and ingrown hairs.
  4. Use a sharp blade and rinse it after each stroke.
  5. Moisturize afterward. Skip alcohol-heavy aftershaves if your skin stings.

Bar soap on your face

Bar soap is the default for many men because it is already in the shower. But traditional soap is alkaline and can strip the skin's protective oils, leaving it tight and irritated — and oily skin often responds by producing more oil. Dermatology guidance for men specifically recommends a mild facial cleanser instead. It is the easiest upgrade in the whole routine: one inexpensive bottle replaces the bar, and most men notice less tightness and redness within days.

Frequently Asked Questions
