What the Research Found
A 2005 study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology added ferulic acid to a solution of 15% L-ascorbic acid and 1% vitamin E. It found the ferulic acid improved the chemical stability of the vitamins and doubled the solution's photoprotection against simulated sunlight — from roughly four-fold to roughly eight-fold, measured by redness and sunburn-cell formation. A 2008 follow-up reported the combination protected human skin against ultraviolet damage.
So Is It Worth the Premium?
- What you are paying for: the original formula behind the research, consistent manufacturing and packaging designed for an unstable ingredient.
- What undercuts it: the vitamin C, E and ferulic trio is no longer exclusive. Several much cheaper serums publish the same three ingredients, and a cheaper bottle used up before it oxidizes can do more for your skin than an expensive one used sparingly.
- The practical point: L-ascorbic acid degrades once opened. A serum you can afford to use generously and replace often is worth more than one you ration.
