The ingredient everyone uses on their face works below the jaw too. The rules are the same: start slowly, moisturize, and protect treated skin from the sun.

The short answer
A retinol body lotion puts retinol into a moisturizer for rough, uneven or sun-damaged skin on the arms, legs and chest. Paula's Choice and Naturium make straightforward retinol body lotions, Olay adds niacinamide, and Nécessaire pairs retinol with exfoliating acids. Start two or three nights a week, moisturize, and protect treated skin from the sun.

How We Picked
We looked for body products that list retinol itself, checked each full ingredient list on INCIDecoder, and noted what else each formula adds — acids, niacinamide or a vitamin C derivative. We have not tested any of these.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

What Retinol Does Below the Jaw
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that the skin converts into retinoic acid, the form that acts on skin cells. On the face it is used for texture, fine lines and sun damage. On the body, people use it for the same reasons on the chest, arms and legs — and for rough, bumpy skin: the American Academy of Dermatology lists retinoids, including retinol, among the ingredients that help keratosis pilaris.
Most of the clinical evidence for retinol comes from facial studies. Body lotions apply the same ingredient to larger areas, so a gradual improvement in texture is a reasonable expectation, but body use is less studied — and none of the lotions on this page states its retinol percentage.

How to Start Without Irritation
Two or three nights a week at first, building up only if your skin stays comfortable.
Start on one area, such as the backs of the arms, before using it everywhere.
Skip freshly shaved or waxed skin for a day.
Do not stack it with a scrub or another acid on the same night — see body scrubs.
Moisturize on the off nights, and wear body sunscreen on treated skin that sees sun.
If your skin is sensitive on the face too, the same logic applies here as in our guide to retinol for sensitive skin: a gentler schedule matters more than a gentler product.

Sensitive skin new to retinoids, which should start on a slower schedule than the label suggests.
Starting a retinol body lotion every night, everywhere
It is tempting to treat a retinol body lotion like any other moisturizer and apply it all over, every night, from day one. Retinoids irritate when they are introduced too fast — on the body as on the face — and a large treated area means a large area of dryness and itching if it goes wrong. Start two or three nights a week on one area, use a plain moisturizer on the other nights, and build up only when your skin stays comfortable.
Frequently Asked Questions
It applies a well-studied ingredient to body skin. Most of the evidence comes from facial studies, so expect gradual improvement in texture rather than dramatic results.
Yes. The American Academy of Dermatology lists retinoids, including retinol, among the ingredients that help, alongside lactic acid, salicylic acid and urea.
Start with two or three nights a week and build up slowly if your skin stays comfortable.
Not on the same day. Alternate them, or you are likely to irritate your skin.
Ask your doctor before using any retinoid product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
