The evidence is real but small. In a randomized, double-blind pilot study of 20 people with mild-to-moderate acne, a hydrocolloid acne dressing used for a week reduced acne severity, inflammation and redness more than plain skin tape. A 2025 review of hydrocolloids in dermatology describes the acne evidence as early and calls for more clinical studies.
They cannot reach deep, painful cysts or nodules. Those need a dermatologist, especially if they keep coming back.
Medicated dots and microdarts are still spot treatments. Use them on one or two spots, not across the face.

Popping a pimple before patching it feels productive, and a patch seems like sensible aftercare. But the American Academy of Dermatology notes that picking, popping or squeezing makes acne take longer to clear and increases the risk of scarring and dark spots. Put the patch on instead of squeezing, let the hydrocolloid absorb what comes to the surface, and replace it once it has swelled with fluid.
