A body mist is fragrance at its lightest: a few hours of scent, sprayed generously. That is either exactly what you want or a sign you want a perfume instead.

The short answer
A body mist is a light, low-concentration fragrance — around the eau fraîche range of 3% or less — made to be sprayed generously on skin and hair and reapplied. Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa 62 is the nutty-sweet gourmand, Victoria's Secret Bare Vanilla and Ariana Grande Cloud are soft and sweet, and Clinique Happy Body Spritz is bright citrus.

How We Picked
We chose well-known body and hair mists across scent families and took each one's note listing from the brand or a major retailer. We have not tested these on skin.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

Where body mists sit
These are industry conventions rather than rules, and brands rarely publish exact percentages. But the gap is the point: a body mist carries a small fraction of the fragrance of an eau de parfum, so it smells softer and fades sooner. For the full comparison, see perfume vs body mist and parfum vs EDP vs EDT.
How to Wear One
Spray more, and more often. A light concentration is designed for generous use and topping up through the day.
Hair counts. Several mists, including Sol de Janeiro's, are sold as hair and body mists.
Layer it over a matching or unscented body lotion to help it last longer.
Mind sensitive skin. The FDA notes that fragrance components can cause reactions in some people; patch-test a new mist first.
Mists are also an inexpensive way to try a scent family before committing to a perfume. If Cheirosa 62 wins you over, the gourmand and vanilla roundups are the next step.

1 — A warm gourmand
Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa 62 Hair and Body Fragrance Mist
What’s in it
Pistachio and almond over heliotrope and jasmine petals, per the brand
A base of vanilla, salted caramel and sandalwood
Sold as a hair and body mist
Its warm, nutty-sweet profile is distinctive, and it is made for spraying generously on hair and body.
Body mists smell good in the bottle and cost less, so it is easy to buy one expecting a perfume that lasts all day. At around 3% fragrance or less, a mist is built to fade within a few hours and be reapplied — that is the design, not a flaw. If you want a scent that lasts from morning to evening, buy an eau de parfum and spray less of it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Concentration. Body mists sit around 3% fragrance or less; eau de parfum is typically 15–20%.
A few hours on skin, often longer on hair and clothes. Plan to reapply.
Many are sold as hair and body mists. Hair holds scent well, but do not overdo it if your hair is dry.
Yes. A mist in the same scent family, or over a matching lotion, can extend a perfume.
Fragrance can cause reactions in some people. Patch-test first, and choose unscented body care if your skin reacts.
