Tranexamic Acid

A pigment ingredient that works upstream of melanin production rather than on it, which is why it holds up against melasma when brighteners do not.

The short answer

Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine, used topically at roughly 2% to 5% to reduce stubborn pigment. It works by interrupting the signaling between keratinocytes and melanocytes rather than by inhibiting melanin directly, which is why it holds up against melasma.

What Tranexamic Acid Actually Does

Most brightening ingredients attack the same target: the tyrosinase enzyme that turns tyrosine into melanin. Tranexamic acid does something different. It interferes with the plasminogen activation pathway in keratinocytes, which reduces the signaling molecules that tell melanocytes to produce pigment in the first place.

That upstream position is the reason it matters for melasma specifically. Melasma is driven partly by vascular and inflammatory signaling rather than simple UV-triggered pigment production, and ingredients that only inhibit tyrosinase tend to underperform against it. Tranexamic acid addresses the instruction rather than the output.

The oral form of the drug is used clinically for melasma under medical supervision, and the topical cosmetic use grew out of that. Those are different interventions at very different doses, and a cosmetic serum should not be described as equivalent to the oral therapy.

Tranexamic acid is well tolerated at all of these, which is a genuine advantage over hydroquinone and over high-percentage acid routines. There is no irritation ladder to climb and no adjustment period, so the percentage question is less consequential here than it is for a retinoid.

Forms and Combinations

  • Standalone serum. Usually 2% to 5% in a water-based formula.
  • With niacinamide. The most common pairing, and a rational one — niacinamide blocks pigment transfer while tranexamic acid reduces the signal to produce it.
  • With kojic acid or alpha arbutin. Adds tyrosinase inhibition, so all three steps of the pathway are addressed.
  • With vitamin C. Common in brightening serums; vitamin C contributes both tyrosinase inhibition and antioxidant protection.
  • In a moisturizer. Convenient and usually at a lower concentration.

This is an ingredient that genuinely benefits from combination, because pigment production is a chain and hitting one link rarely holds. A well-built pigment routine usually contains two or three complementary actives rather than a higher dose of one.

How to Use Tranexamic Acid

  1. Apply once or twice daily after cleansing, before moisturizer.
  2. There is no adjustment period. Start at your intended frequency.
  3. Pair it with daily sun protection. Without it, treating melasma is futile — see zinc oxide and prefer a tinted formula, since visible light also drives melasma.
  4. Give it twelve weeks before judging, and expect improvement rather than resolution.
  5. Combine it with a second pigment mechanism rather than raising the dose.
  6. Continue past the point of visible improvement. Melasma relapses when treatment stops and sun exposure continues.

Who It Suits, and Who Should Avoid It

Tranexamic acid suits melasma, stubborn post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and anyone who has plateaued on vitamin C and niacinamide. It suits deeper skin tones particularly well, because it is gentle and unlikely to cause the irritation that itself triggers further pigment.

  • Topical use is well tolerated, but the oral drug has a clotting-risk profile and is prescribed with care. Do not self-medicate orally on the strength of a cosmetic result.
  • If sun protection is not in place, this is the wrong purchase. Pigment treatment without UV protection does not work.
  • Freckles and lentigines respond less than melasma and post-inflammatory marks. Set expectations accordingly.
  • It is not a fast ingredient. If you want visible change in four weeks, this will disappoint you.

Beyond the Face: Neck, Chest and Underarms

Melasma frequently extends to the neck and the upper chest, and the same routine applies there — with the same sunscreen discipline, which is harder to maintain on skin that clothing sometimes covers and sometimes does not.

Tranexamic acid also appears in products for underarm and inner-thigh darkening, where the pigment is usually friction- and inflammation-driven. The mechanism is plausible there, the published evidence is thin, and reducing the friction usually matters more than the serum does.
