The brief is narrower than it looks. A date happens at arm's length across a small table, which rules out most of what people reach for when they want to be noticed.

The short answer
For a date, choose a warm fragrance that reads well close up rather than one that fills a room: skin-like ambers, vanillas, soft woods and musks. Mugler Angel and Carolina Herrera Good Girl cover the bold gourmand end, Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de L'Homme the restrained one, Givenchy L'Interdit the floral, and Initio Oud for Greatness the statement.

How We Picked
We chose five fragrances that are in production and currently sold in the US, across gourmand, floral, woody and amber registers, and with a spread of prices. Notes, perfumers and years come from the houses and published references. We have not tested these, and how a fragrance reads on you is personal.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we did instead: compiled the published concentrations and ingredient lists, checked each claim against what the formula can actually support, and wrote down who each product is wrong for. The full method is published so you can check it.

The Actual Brief
Most date-night advice optimizes for the wrong distance. You will spend the evening at conversational range — across a table, beside someone in a cab, close enough that a fragrance built to project across a nightclub becomes the third person at dinner. What works is a scent with presence at arm's length and restraint beyond it.
That rules in the warm, slightly edible and skin-like registers: amber, vanilla, soft woods, musk, and the gourmands that smell like something rather than everything. It rules out the very loud ouds and the aquatic sport fragrances, for opposite reasons — one crowds the table, the other says nothing at all.
What Reads Well Close Up
Register
Effect at close range
Risk
Amber and vanilla
Warm, comfortable, quietly sensual
Turns sweet if over-applied
Gourmand
Edible and memorable
Polarizing; some people dislike it instantly
Soft woods and musk
Clean, skin-like, easy to be near
Can read as unremarkable
White floral
Romantic and classical
Heavy-handed in a small room
Oud and incense
Distinctive, adult, expensive-smelling
The easiest category to overdo
The most reliable structure is warm base, quiet top: something whose first ten minutes are unremarkable and whose drydown is where the character lives. That is the opposite of how fragrance is usually sold, and it is why sampling on skin for a full evening matters more here than in any other category — see fragrance longevity.
Timing and Application
Apply 20 to 30 minutes before you leave. The opening is the loudest part of any fragrance, and you want to be past it.
Moisturize first. Fragrance clings to hydrated skin; on dry skin it fades faster and projects harder early on.
Two sprays, on the chest. Warmth rises, and the scent reaches the right distance without a cloud.
Do not layer a scented body product on top unless it is from the same line; two competing accords read as neither.
Wear something you already know. A date is a poor place to test whether a new bottle turns sour on you after an hour.
A Note on Gendered Marketing
Every fragrance here is worn by people of every gender, whichever counter it is sold at. The men's and women's labels describe marketing categories, not materials: the same amber, vanilla and musk accords appear on both sides of the shop. If a scent works on you at close range, the label on the box is not a reason to leave it.
Released in 1992; widely credited as the first modern gourmand
Patchouli, praline, red berries and vanilla
Refillable bottle format
The fragrance that invented the category, and still the benchmark for edible warmth. Worn at two sprays it is memorable in exactly the way a date-night fragrance should be.
Who it’s not for
Anyone applying more than two sprays, and anyone whose company dislikes sweetness — few fragrances divide a room this sharply.
The fragrance that gets compliments in a bar is usually the one that projects hardest, and projection is the enemy across a small table. Loud aquatics, high-strength ouds and anything you already apply in four sprays will crowd a conversation. Save them for the room where you wanted to be found, and wear something warm and close for the room where you have already been found.
Frequently Asked Questions
A warm, close-wearing one — amber, vanilla, soft woods or a restrained gourmand — applied in two sprays.
Twenty to thirty minutes, so the loud opening has settled before you arrive.
Two, on the chest. Four on the neck is what most people mean by too much.
No. They describe marketing categories, not materials. Wear what works on you.
Better not to. Fragrance changes over hours, and a date is a bad place to discover how.
